In 1999, Laura Lume returns to Vila do Sossego, from where she fled 12 years ago, and tries to reconnect with her old friends Rosa and Pedro, as well as her ex-boyfriend Marcos. In 1987, Laura's grandfather led the Shadow Cycle sect, where he used the power of the Ignis Fungus, a fungus of mysterious origin, in his sacrificial rituals. Laura used the same power and took revenge on her grandfather for the death of her parents. Traumatized, she was taken to Rio by her uncle.
Upon returning, in addition to settling accounts with the past, she tries to write again. She meets Lúcio, the mysterious owner of El Gran Circo Mágico (The Great Magic Circus), and Sofia, his wife and a former trapeze artist injured in a suspicious accident. Laura discovers that the circus was in town in 1987 and that Lúcio was involved in the sinister events that made her run away. The plot reaches its climax on New Year's Eve, with the kidnapping of Rosa's daughter by the sect and Laura's final fight against Lúcio and the Shadow Cycle.
